Proclaimed the rarest two-door Bentley of the modern era when it was revealed in March 2020, the Bacalar heralded the marque’s return to personalised coachbuilding. Just 12 cars were designed, engineered, and handcrafted to individual customer tastes by Bentley’s in-house coachbuilder Mulliner, whose roots trace back to crafting bespoke, horse-drawn carriages in the 1500s. All examples were allocated by the time the Bacalar was unveiled to the public.
Borrowing design elements from the award-winning Bentley EXP 100 GT concept, all-new bodywork exclusive to the Bacalar tapers dramatically at the rear, evoking the unmistakable aesthetic of a classic barchetta shape. The doors and wings are made from carbon fibre, with the rear clamshell and top deck in lightweight aluminium. There is no provision for a roof, which lends both purity and extravagance to the design.
An enhanced version of Bentley’s 6.0-litre W12 engine delivers 650 brake horsepower and 667 pounds-feet of torque via an eight-speed, dual-clutch transmission. To handle the might, an advanced all-wheel-drive system varies the torque split between front and rear wheels, prioritising the latter for optimum efficiency and dynamic performance.
The interior’s steeply angled console bisects a wraparound cockpit that sweeps back into the door panels towards a semi-enclosed luggage compartment behind the seats, purposely designed for optional fitted Schedoni luggage that could be specified with the same trim used in the cabin. A knurled pattern unique to the Bacalar adorns the iconic “bullseye” vents, controls, and speaker frets. Offered a near-infinite number of possibilities for customising the interior, clients worked closely with Bentley Mulliner to personalise every detail—down to the piping rendered by a local artisan with unique patterns, colours, and embossed effects—ensuring that each of the 12 Bacalars produced in 2022 is like no other.
The example presented here was the 5th produced and is offered from original Monaco-based ownership. Finished in Memphis Red with body-coloured mirror housings and power humps, its Gloss Black elements—including the grille mesh, bonnet vents, side vents, A-pillars, rear bumper insert, and brake callipers—provide subtle contrast, as do the satin nickel front grille surround, DLO brightwork, and Bentley winged logos front and rear. The headlights and tailpipe are brushed aluminium, and the tri-finish 22-inch wheels feature Dark Grey Satin Alloy with a painted silver face and satin nickel highlight.
Drawing the eye most immediately within the cabin is the beautifully intricate burled pattern of Vavona veneer, derived from the root of an ancient Redwood tree. Exceptionally figured, it dresses the upper dash and doors beautifully. The interior’s main hide colour is creamy Linen, with Alcantara in the same hue on the headrests and seat backs. A secondary hide of deep maroon, called Cricket Ball, lines the upper surfaces of the dash and doors, while the steering wheel combines both leathers with satin nickel and bright chrome accents.
Subtler details illustrate how much consideration was given to pairing the interior with the exterior: Hotspur Alcantara trim, piping, and stitching on the seats and Hotspur Alcantara trim with Linen contrast stitching on the console wings coordinate with the Memphis Red bodywork. A particularly inspired touch is the special diamond-perforated Hotspur piping with a Linen core dressing the seat backs. Satin nickel headrest bezzles, clock face, and dials transpose the exterior brightwork theme to the interior.
Named after Laguna Bacalar—a lake renowned for its breath-taking natural beauty—in Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula, the Bentley Bacalar is the quintessential expression of bespoke, open-top, driver-focused grand touring, marking the British manufacturer’s return to coachbuilding. Now offered from single ownership with just 1,131 kilometres on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this remarkable example received its three-year, 16,000-kilometre service from Bentley Mougins in France in August 2025 to maintain the car’s integrity and ensure it is in top condition. Selected pieces of black leather luggage are included in the sale of this phenomenal and rare coachbuilt Bentley.
